Ostrogoths in Italy, Athalaric, c. 526-534. Gold Solidus (4.42 g) minted in the name of Justinian I at Rome. Helmeted and cuirassed bust three-quarter facing, holding spear and shield. Reverse: Victory standing left, holding long cross; in left field, star. MEC 1, 122; MIB I, plate 37, 28. Rare. Slight crease in flan. About Extremely Fine.

Medieval European Coinage (MEC), by Philip Grierson, Mark Blackburn and Lucia Travaini (so far) is the best up-to-date reference on the series and highly recommended. There are two volumes (#1 and #14) currently available. The examples in the Fitzwilliam Museum are highlighted.
