Lot 3641

Ostrogoths in Italy, Theoderic, c. 493-526. Gold Solidus (4.15 g) minted in the name of Anastasius at Rome. Helmeted and cuirassed facing bust, holding spear and shield. Reverse: Victory standing left, holding long cross; in right field, star. MEC 1, 112; MIB I, plate 36, 9. Rare. Flan cut at 1:30 o'clock. Otherwise, Extremely Fine.

Stylistically, this is of the highest order of our offered Ostrogothic lots. Note the upright, rectangular head and excellent detailing. All the Ostrogothic issues use the exergual inscription "COMOB" for western emissions, instead of "CONOB" found on the eastern-minted coins.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,500.

Realized $1,909
