Lot 3371

A. Plautius, moneyer. AR Denarius minted at Rome, 55 BC. Turreted head right of Cybele. Reverse: "Bacchius" (= Aristobulus of Judaea?) kneeling right beside camel, presenting olive-branch. Sear 395; Plautia 13; Cr. 431/1; Syd. 932. Iridescent toning. Choice Very Fine.

This reverse type represents the submission of Aristobulus II to Pompey; the legend "Bacchivs Ivdaeus" is probably the result of mistakenly equating Aristobulus's title, High Priest of Judaea, with High Priest of Bacchus in Judaea.
Estimated Value $200 - 250.
The Pat Coyle Collection.
