Lot 3365

Q. Cassius Longinus, moneyer. AR Denarius minted at Rome, 55 BC. Diademed and veiled head right of Vesta. Reverse: Temple of Vesta, curule chair within; to left, voting urn; to right, tablet inscribed AC. Sear 389; Cassia 9; Cr. 428/1; Syd. 917. Toned. Very Fine and rare.

This type recalls the jurist L. Cassius Longinus Ravilla (consul 127 BC), who led the retrial against two of three Vestal Virgins accused of incest; the two had been acquitted by the pontifices initially, but were ultimately condemned to death. Rome's luck was believed to depend on the chastity of the Vestals.
Estimated Value $250 - 300.
The Pat Coyle Collection.
