Lot 3360

Faustus Cornelius Sulla, moneyer. AR Denarius minted at Rome, 56 BC. Diademed, draped bust right of Diana; above, crescent; to left, lituus. Reverse: Sulla seated left; to left, King Bocchus of Mauretania kneeling right, presenting olive branch; to right, King Jugurtha of Numida kneeling left, hands bound. Sear 383; Cornelia 59; Cr. 426/1; Syd. 879. An exceptional example of this scarce type. Nearly Extremely Fine.

Faustus Sulla was the son of the Dictator; his coins celebrate his father. This reverse type commemorates one of Sulla's earliest, most famous, and most remarkable accomplishments: as quaestor to Gaius Marius in Numidia, Sulla compelled Bocchus to surrender his son-in-law Jugurtha into Sulla's custody, effectively ending the Jugurthine War and, perhaps, laying the foundation of his rivalry with Marius.
Estimated Value $1,200 - 1,500.
