L. Marcius Philippus, moneyer. AR Denarius minted at Rome, 56 BC. Diademed head right of King Ancus Marcius; to left, lituus. Reverse: Equestrian statue right atop arcade of five arches; below horse's forefoot, flower. Sear 382; Marcia 28; Cr. 425/1; Syd. 919. Struck on an oblong flan. Areas of flatness. Toned. Nearly Extremely Fine.

The statue depicts Q. Marcius Rex, who repaired Rome's aging aquaducts and built the Aqua Marcia in 144 BC. The gens Marcia claimed descent from King Ancus Marcius, the fourth king of Rome and, according to legend, the first to employ an aquaduct to bring water to the city.
