M. Aemilius Scaurus and P. Plautius Hypsaeus, moneyers. AR Denarius minted at Rome, 58 BC. King Aretas of Nabataea kneeling right beside camel, extending olive branch. Reverse: Jupiter in quadriga left, brandishing thunderbolt; below horses, scorpion. Sear 379; Aemilia 8; Cr. 422/1b; Syd. 913. Reverse struck from a worn die. Toned. Very Fine.

One of the earliest examples of a moneyer commemorating his own accomplishment. As governor of Syria, Aemilius Scaurus compelled Aretas III to end his siege on Jerusalem and to pay an enormous fine to Pompey. Scaurus was curule aedile with Publius Plautus in 58 BC.
