Q. Pomponius Musa. AR Denarius. Rome, c. 66 BC. Diademed bust of Apollo right. Reverse: Hercules standing right, playing lyre, club at his feet. Pomponia 8; Syd. 810; Craw. 410/1. Hercules Musagetes was the leader of the choir. Delicately toned with underlying luster. Rare. Superb Extremely Fine.

This and the eleven coins following belong to the most extensive series of Republican denarii issued by a single moneyer. An elaborate illustration of his cognomen, Musa's reverse types probably depict each of the statues in the Temple of Hercules Musarum in the Circus Flaminia. Hercules Musagetes playing a lyre is represented as the leader of the Muses.
Estimated Value $1,500 - 2,000.
