L. Calpurnius Piso L.f. Frugi, moneyer. AR Denarius struck at Rome, 90 BC. Laureate head right of Apollo; to left, uncertain symbol and letter. Reverse: Naked horseman galloping right, holding palm; above, anchor and XVII. Sear 235; Calpurnia 11; Syd. 663-70. Toned. Extremely Fine.

The praetor L. Calpurnius Piso propsed the annual celebration of the Ludi Apollinares, which were established in 212 BC; both the head of Apollo and the horseman are references to these games. This issue is one of the most prolific in the entire Republican series, with over three hundred variations in the British Museum collection alone.
