Lot 3238

Anonymous moneyer. AR Victoriatus minted at Rome, 211-208 BC. Laureate head right of Jupiter. Reverse: Victory standing right, crowning trophy; between, VB in monogram. Sear 51; RSC Anonymous 36m; Cr. 95/1a-b; Syd. 113. Lightly toned. A pleasing example. Extremely Fine.

The victoriatus, like the denarius, began to be minted about 211 BC. While the value of the denarius was based on the bronze as rather than the didrachm of Magna Graecia, the victoriatus was exactly equivalent to a drachm, and intended for use where the drachm was the unit of reckoning.
Estimated Value $400 - 500.
The Pat Coyle Collection.

Realized $604
