August Kaufmann. The Traveling Circus. Oil on canvas laid on masonite.

Size: 31.7 x 42.9 in. (80.6 x 109 cm). Size with frame: 38.75 x 50 in.

Signed at lower right: "August Kaufmann AFT and dated "1883."

Condition report: The canvas was lined approximately 40 years ago to a sheet of masonite; no tacking edges. Approximately 3 x 3 in. repaired tear in the upper right corner in the middle of the horizontal wooden beam. Micro-cracking, primarily in the areas on the left. Scattered thin areas from a prior cleaning, to the left of the macaws and above the lion's cage on the left. Recently professionally cleaned to remove an old layer of varnish.

This painting formerly belonged to Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Alfred Gitelson, known for his order mandating de facto racial integration of Los Angeles schools by September, 1971.
