Paul Muni. 11 x 14 in. photo signed in the plate by photographer Herbert Mitchell at lower left. matted and framed to 14¾ x 17¾ in. Muni (1895-1967) was born Meshilem Meier Weisenfreund, and his early years were spent on stage with the Yiddish Theatre. He became a film star when he appeared in Howard Hawks' 1932 movie Scarface. Muni was nominated six times for an Oscar; in 1936 he won the Best Actor award for his role as Louis Pasteur in The Story of Louis Pasteur. Bette Davis called Muni "the first real honest-to-God star I ever worked with" and Warner Brothers touted Muni as "the screen's greatest actor."
