Apollo 8, 1968, "Alternate Newsweek Magazine" Cover Art (11x15) This copper (?) printing plate (for the January 6, 1969 edition) was prepared for use as an alternate cover in case the flight was unsuccessful. It has to be remembered that this flight was the first to go to the moon (a last minute decision by NASA) and the magazine was prepared to use this cover in case the flight didn't return. The cover design is similar (but different) from the issued cover and features larger pictures of the three astronauts as well as an "APOLLO TRAGEDY" diagonal banner at the top of the cover. The issued cover has the pictures of the astronauts at the bottom with the moon in the background and "APOLLO TRIUMPH" across the top. There are the usual rubs and dings on the printing plate as might be expected, but the plate is indicative of a tense time in the American space program. Undoubtedly unique and historic.
Estimated Value $1,500 - 2,500.

Realized $1,200
