Lot 321

Miscellaneous, c1960//1980s, Life and Other Magazines with Deke Slayton Address Lavels on Most. A half cartons worth of magazines dating from the Mercury flights consisting of mainly Life magazines with just the space-related articles and the covers included. We do note a complete 1979 Houston City magazine with an article about Tom Wolfe's "The Right Stuff" on which Deke has written sarcastic comments by some of the pictures. What caught our eye was the photo of the Mercury 7 astronauts at the opening of JSC in Houston, all wearing their "Cowboy" hats (we have the actual hat presented to Deke Slayton and worn in this photo elsewhere in this sale. Deke noted "Ya'll look like LBJ." An interesting lot that the consignor thought important enough to have saved for the past 40 odd years. There is also a copy of the 1962 Explorer's Club dinner held in honor of the Group one and two astronauts (11x14"), a copy of a 1976 ASTP post-flight visit itinerary to Kuwait, a copy of an Advertisement for The Aluminum Association" featuring Deke as spokesman, etc. A nice lot worth a second look.
Estimated Value $250 - 350.
Ex. the astronaut Donald K. "Deke" Slayton Family collection.
