[Kaiulani] Her Personal Book Signed Twice by Alexander Scott Cleghorn. Personal copy of A Brief History of the Hawaiian People (New York: American Book Company, 1891), by W.D. Alexander. Quarto, 341 pp. Signed "A.S. Cleghorn" on the first and next to last end pages. Hand-tooled black leather covers with gold inscription on the front cover: "H.R.H. Victoria Kaiulani Heiress Apparent." Marbled end pages, gold decorative border and lettering; five raised bands on spine; gilt-edge pages. Light toning to pages. A map Book plate of Helen Hewlett Hough is affixed to inside cover. Hough, who was from Stockton, California, met Percy Thomas Cleghorn while visiting Hawaii and they married in 1911. Percy was personal secretary to Kaiulani's father, Archibald Cleghorn. A folded map of the Sandwich Islands, taken from another book and with the notation, "Captain McKonochie's valuable memoir on establishing a Colony in one of the Sandwich Islands," is placed loosely in the front of the book; written on the map is "Cleghorn 1897."
