Foch, Ferdinand (1851-1929) French general; fought in Franco-Prussian War (1870-71); in World War I, as Allied Supreme Commander on the Western Front, he received credit for masterminding the victory over Germany; headed Armistice negotiations and played an important role at the Paris Peace Conference.
