Lot 368

1817 N-4 R4 Obverse Brockage ANACS graded Fine-12 Details, Graffiti-Cleaned. Slightly glossy golden tan with darker olive brown toning in protected areas. There are small spots of microscopic roughness scattered over both sides, but the more significant problem is "1704" strongly carved into the bottom of the reverse under the wreath ribbon. The only other notable defect is a dull dent hidden under the E in UNITED on the incuse brockage side. This is a reverse brockage strike, and the impressions (normal and incuse) are evenly centered and aligned with each other. While this reverse die was used to strike three different die varieties (N-4, N-14, and N-5 in that order), the early die state strongly suggests this brockage occurred during the N-4 die marriage. A neat error but disrespected and abused as is so often the case with early mint errors. Our grade is VG10 sharpness net G5.
Estimated Value $400-UP.
