Lot 349

1816 N-2 R1 MS60+. Attractive glossy steel and chocolate brown with satiny mint luster covering the protected areas. The only marks are a diagonal nick-like pre-striking planchet mark in the field right of star 2 and a faint diagonal hairline scratch left of the curl on the cheek, plus a tiny splash of slightly lighter toning between star 5 and the coronet. The reverse is choice. M-LDS with the usual irregular rim cud break from star 8 to star 11 plus a small but clearly defined rim cud between stars 11 & 12. (In the latest state, the earlier rim cud extends CCW to between stars 7 & 8.) The reverse is rotated 30 degrees CW relative to a normal head-to-foot die orientation. Most likely from the famous Randall Hoard of mint state cents dated 1816-1820.
Estimated Value $400-UP.
Ex Del Bland 2/1980.
