Lot 1118

1855-O. PCGS graded AU-55. Untoned with some luster still visible. Only 55,000 minted of which merely 500 examples are estimated to have survived. The type II gold Dollar was a problem for the mints--struck on too-thin planchets with designs engraved in much too high relief. This is a fact that held true for all the branch mints, and thus locating a well-preserved, Choice AU representative like the coin in the present lot often becomes a considerable challenge. Of the pieces struck at New Orleans, Dahlonega, Charlotte and San Francisco, the former is by a small margin the most available, yet it remains a coveted branch-mint issue for this three-year type.

Both sides of this handsome offering are boldly impressed from the dies, and we say this in light of the previously mentioned facts. The surfaces still possess some luster, and there is no evidence of copper spotting. Pop 66; 64 finer (PCGS # 7535) .
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,200.

Realized $2,530
