Lot 497

1803 C-1/2/4 Obverse Brockage. NGC graded VG-10. Chocolate brown with darker olive brown toning in protected areas. The surfaces are covered with very shallow corrosion, but there are no significant marks, verdigris, or other defects. The surfaces are rather dull thanks to the fine roughness, but a thin layer of dirt and oxidation is also present. A light brushing may bring some life back to the surfaces. This piece is a slightly off center obverse brockage. It was struck between the obverse die and the obverse of a previously struck half cent that failed to eject from the press. Both the normal and incuse brockage impressions are strong and slightly off center to K-5.5. In addition the incuse impression is rotated about 15 degrees relative to the normal strike. This obverse die was used to strike the C-1, C-2, and C-4 die varieties. The sharpness of the dentils on the normal obverse side suggests the die was relatively new when this piece was struck, and that would tie it to the C-2 die marriage, which came first. Regardless, this is decent example of a very rare type of mint error. Our grade is VG10 sharpness net VG7.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.
