Lot 4051

Kingdom of Macedon. Alexander III, the Great, 336-323 BC. AR Tetradrachm (16.96 g) minted posthumously at Perga, c. 196-195 BC (year 26). Head right of Herakles, wearing lion's skin headdress. Reverse: Zeus enthroned left, holding eagle and scepter; in left field, date. Price 2940; M. 1242. Extremely Fine, a bit flatly struck on the reverse.

Other than the emissions struck earlier at Ake and Sidon, there are few cities which included the particular year of striking. Dated coins found with other issues or antiquities can provide a great deal of supplementary information applicable to the treasure. Numismatists can then compare dies, die-wear, metrology and stylistic differences.
Estimated Value $375 - 475.
