Lot 771

1918-S, 8 over 7. PCGS graded VF-30. CAC Approved. A great rarity of the last century. Few overdates were created in the 20th century, and all are eagerly sought by collectors. Perhaps a thousand of these 1918-S, 8 over 7 quarter dollars exist, the grading services have seen about half that number, and it is likely that more are hidden away or sitting in albums, having been acquired decades ago. This one has the minute features noted in the Breen Encyclopedia. The overdate feature is plain with a glass. Apparently in the rush to get dies ready, one 1918 die received a blow from the 1917 master hub, then the hub was switched to the 1918 hub, and the die was struck again. No one noticed (or cared) that is had the overdate, and the die was shipped and put into production at the San Francisco Mint, much to the delight of collectors (PCGS # 5726) .
Estimated Value $3,800 - 4,200.

Realized $4,313
