Lot 50

1856 Judd-177 Pattern Strike in Copper Nickel R5. PCGS graded Proof 63. Glossy light silvery gray and steel with hints of iridescent rose and bluish steel in protected areas on the reverse. The fields on both sides are reflective but the mirrors are not especially deep, which is typical of these copper nickel strikes. The notable defects are a faint planchet lamination line from the date through star 1 into the dentils at the left plus a collection of tiny planchet voids in the dentils over the left top of the U in UNITED, all as struck. The strike is slightly soft, as nearly always seen on this pattern. The weakness is most obvious on the obverse dentils and highpoints of the wreath. Our grade is Proof-60. The J-177 attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Pop 8; 17 finer at PCGS.
Estimated Value $1,500-UP.
