Lucania, Metapontion, c. 520-510 BC. AR Nomos (or Stater; 7.88 g). Ear of grain in relief; to right, ethnic. Reverse: Ear of grain incuse. Noe (ANS NNM 32) 76. A bit porous. Choice Very Fine.

Since both obverse and reverse dies were used for production of the early incuse nomoi of mainland Magna Graecia, the dies had to be perfectly aligned or the coin would shatter under the pressure of the hammer's strike.
