Sale 63

Lot 1639

1910-D. NGC graded MS-64. Lovely original golden toning, the underlying field is satin-like, as are all devices. This design incorporates a stylized Liberty head by Augustus Saint-Gaudens decked out in a fancy feathered headdress, evoking the imagery of the Native American people who had settled the land before the first European settlers made their appearance. The profile Saint-Gaudens chose originated in a figure of Nike ('Victory'), part of his Gen. Sherman Monument (1905), ultimately inspired by a Hellenistic Wingless Victory on the temple of Zeus Soter at Pergamon (PCGS # 8866) .
Estimated Value $1,500 - 1,600.

Realized $1,581
