Lot 727

1806 C-2 R4 VG8. Very slightly sharper with a few too many light contact marks for the higher grade, including a couple fine scratches inside the top of the wreath. Otherwise the color and surfaces are very attractive for the grade. Glossy light chocolate brown with a few tiny puffs of darker olive and steel toning in the field behind the portrait. Struck with the obverse die clearly misaligned to K-10 while the reverse is centered on the planchet. Very late die state, later than the latest reported by Manley (his 3.0). In addition to a strong die crack from the 6 through the bust tip there is a fine die crack passing along the tops of RIC in AMERICA. The crack at RIC was thought to occur during the later 1806 C-3 die marriage, but this piece confirms the crack occurs during the C-2 marriage. It also invalidates Manley state 1.0 for 1806 C-3, which supposedly has an uncracked reverse. Another very important piece for the die state specialist.
Estimated Value $300-UP.
