Lot 709

1802/0 C-2 R3 Overdate 2 over 0 with Reverse of 1803 VG10. Struck over Spoiled Large Cent. Slightly sharper but lightly cleaned and retoned rather glossy dark bluish steel and olive. No corrosion or verdigris, but there are a few light contact marks. The notable ones are a couple light scratches in the field before the portrait. E-MDS, Manley state 2.0. Struck over a spoiled large cent that was struck about 60% off center, and bold undertype from the large cent shows on both sides. STAT and portions of the wreath from the large cent dominate the lower left quadrant of the obverse and the weaker but clearly visible face of Ms Liberty from the large cent shows at D-STAT on the reverse of the half cent. The obverse and reverse elements of the large cent undertype show a face opposite STAT, and this can happen only if the cent was struck more than one time. Obviously the large cent displayed multiple striking errors before it was cut down to make a half cent planchet. While there are perhaps a dozen examples of this variety that display some large cent undertype, very few have undertype that is nearly this obvious. A very important piece for the half cent specialist.
Estimated Value $2,000-UP.
