Leo III (and Constantine V), AD 720-741. Gold Solidus (3.95 g) minted in Italy, perhaps Syracuse. Facing bust of Leo III holding globus cruciger and akakia. Reverse: Facing bust of Constantine V holding globus cruciger and akakia. D.O. 45; Ratto 1738; S. 1524. Rare. A superb strike and coin; lustrous. Virtually Mint State.

A remarkably fine coin, certainly one of the very best, if not the finest example, of this rare Sicilian type of the eighth century.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 4,000.

Realized $4,945
