Lot 3448

Great Britain - Scotland. Gold Medal, 1750. Med. Ill. II. p.655,359. 22.8 grams. 34 mm. By Thomas Pingo. The Claims of the Strarts revived. Prince Charles Edward bust right. Reverse: A leafless hollow tree. Only six eamples struck in gold. Very Rare. NGC graded MS-61.

The Jacobite "Oak Society" met at the Crown and Anchor on the corner of Arundel Street and the Strand, almost opposite the church of St. Clement Danes. The medal was perhaps struck to coincide with the visit of Charles to London in 1750, when he attended a meeting of the society in person. Subscription to the society was one guinea, upon the payment of which members were entitled to a specimen of the medal in bronze. In the case of specimens in gold and silver the value of the metal, in addition to the subscription, was charged. The numbers struck were 6 in gold, 102 in silver, 283 in copper and 50 in tin.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 4,000.
Ex Spink & Son Ltd. Auction (4 March 1997), lot 254.
