Lot 336

1831 N-4 R3 EF40. Small Letters Reverse. EF-40. Choice glossy chocolate brown with frosty luster in protected areas, especially on the reverse, and hints of faded mint red remaining around a couple of the stars. Only a few trivial contact marks from perfection for the grade. The best identifying marks are a tiny rim nick under the second 1 in the date and another over the first A in AMERICA. Nicely struck E-MDS, before any of the fine die cracks form at stars 8 & 9. The obverse fields are hard and slightly reflective. Outstanding eye appeal for the grade. Called EF40 and tied for CC#5 in the Bland census. Noyes says VF35 net VF30 and tied for CC#10, his photo #25640. Removed from an NGC slab graded AU58BN (NGC label included). DWH #2611.
Estimated Value $1,500-UP.
Ex Howard R. Newcomb, J. C. Morgenthau 5/45:625 (Newcomb collection pillbox included)-Floyd T. Starr, Stack's 6/13/84:248-Wes Rasmussen, Heritage 1/13/05:3586 (the attribution and Rasmussen provenance are noted on the NGC label).
