Lot 2452

Hadrian, AD 117-138. Gold Aureus (7.26 g) minted at Rome, AD 119-122. Laureate, cuirassed and draped bust left of Hadrian. Reverse: Helmeted Roma seated left on cuirass, holding spear and Victory with wreath; behind, shield and bow with quiver. Cf. RIC 77A (no bow and quiver); cf. BMC plate 49, 18 (head right). NGC graded Choice AU Star: Strike 5/5; Surface 4/5.

Portraits facing left on Roman Imperial coinage were very often engraved by the master celators of the perod; this is no exception. This example exhibits wonderful finesse, superb modeling and depth of facial expression. It well shows the strength, wisdom and Hellenistic ideals of this admired emperor.
Estimated Value $5,000 - 6,000.
