Nero, AD 54-68. Gold Aureus (7.22 g) minted at Rome, AD 64-65. Laureate head right of Nero. Reverse: Nero, radiate, and Poppaea standing beside each other. RIC 44 [as R2]; BMC 52; Calicó 401. Choice Very Fine.

Struck at the time of the devastating fire of Rome, this aureus is doubly desirable in depicting Poppaea, Nero's second wife. Earlier, she had been married to the future emperor Otho.
