Lot 2210

The Jewish War. AR Shekel (13.67 g) dated year 4 (69/70 CE). Temple vessel with rim decorated with nine pearls; above, date. Reverse: Stem with three pomegranate fruits. Mesh. 158. H-665. An absolutely beautiful specimen, sound metal with no signs of corrosion. Lightly toned and Extremely Fine. Always in demand and Very Rare.

As the Jewish War continued, coinage became more difficult, accounting for fewer and fewer shekels and divisions being minted. Full shekels are very rare, with only a handful of silver half shekels being unearthed. Much more often seen are the subdivisions struck in bronze dated year four.
Estimated Value $25,000 - 30,000.

Realized $33,350
