Lot 2045

Sicily, Athe…, c. 357-336 BC (or a bit earlier). AE 13 (Trias). Helmeted head right of Athena; ethnic. Reverse: Female figure seated right, holding trident and bow. Calciati III, 287, 3. Extremely rare. Even brown patina; beautifully detailed; Extremely Fine.

This example is much sharper than any illustrated in Calciati and distinctly reveals the retrograde inscription, perhaps referring to the obverse portrayal rather than to the ethnic. As yet, the city of origin remains a mystery.
Estimated Value $450 - 550.

Realized $633
