Lot 1466

1847-C Liberty. NGC graded MS-63. Mostly untoned. Well struck for this date. Only 23,226 pieces minted. This issue had the highest mintage of any Charlotte Mint quarter eagle, and is one of the most available. Mint State survivors are scarce, however. Unquestionably the best feature of this coin is its desirable bold strike. Both sides show full detail. While we have not examined every known 1847-C half eagle, it seems a rare possibility that there are many others as sharp, as attractive, as carefully graded as this piece. There are some very faint hairlines (not from cleaning) on both the obverse and the reverse. The fields are remarkably clean with just one fine lines under the A in STATES visible below magnification. An important example of Southern branch-mint gold and one that is seldom seen in such a high-class condition. Pop 3; 4 finer in 64.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 11,000.
Ex: Pittman Collection.
