Lot 1455

1870 $1 Gold Indian. NGC graded MS-64. Wonderful lustrous surfaces and a very choice example of this rare low mintage issue. Only 6,300 minted. The year before this gold dollar was made, the United States had experienced a major gold market crisis that shook the world's money markets like an earthquake. The economies of America, Britain, and Europe were nearing a business cycle peak in the early 1870s which, three years later in 1873, would turn into in a sharp, lengthy market downturn. Gold dollar mintage was the bare minimum in 1870. This is due partly to the fact that a competing silver dollar was also made (and in far larger numbers) to supply what little demand there was for this denomination from banks and businesses. Pop 15; 16 finer (PCGS # 7569) .
Estimated Value $1,650 - 1,750.

Realized $1,926
