Guevara, Ernesto "Che" (1928-1967) Argentine doctor who became a revolutionary; he was second in command to Fidel Castro during the Cuban revolution (1956-59). After 1959, when Castro came to power, Che served in various ministerial capacities and as an envoy for Cuban socialism. He was involved in training the troops who repelled the Bay of Pig invasion and instrumental in bringing to Cuban the missiles which provoked the Cuban Missile Crisis. From 1965-67 he was active in leftish guerilla movements in Congo and Latin America. He was killed in Bolivia by CIA-trained Bolivian troops. Che's memory is both revered and reviled. His image has become a popular culture icon.

Autograph Note Signed "Che," on tan, ruled paper, one-half page, 8½ x5¾ in., in Spanish, n.p., February 16, 1964. Approving an article which was going to appear in the weekly Cuban magazine, "Bohemia." A period docket in Spanish at top of verso states that it is a note from Che approving publication of an article about the "Antillana de Accero." Bottom of verso has a purple "Bohemia Archivo" stamp with a penciled notation, "Che Guevara - 1964" and another penciled note below, "La Havana - Feb. 19cd." Fine; light toning and foxing. Penned and signed in black ink.
