Franklin, Sir John (1786-1847) English explorer and admiral. He proved the existence of a Northwest Passage, a water route from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean through Canada. He headed three expeditions into the Arctic (1818, 1819-22 and 1825-27), served as Lt. Governor of Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) from 1836-43; and in 1845 left on an expedition to discover the Northwest Passage; he and his 128 men all perished. Autograph Note Signed as Governor of Van Diemen's Land, 1¾ x 7¾, Govr. House, April 12, 1841. A personal note sending regards and remembrances from Eleanor and Mary and sending love to his correspondent's family. He notes that the "school is increasing"; Franklin had founded a college with his own funds. He adds a note, "Dr. Macdonald goes home on the Fortitude & has promised to call on you…." Matted with an image of Franklin and framed to an overall size of 9 x 15¾ in.
