1846 Liberty Seated Dime. NGC graded AU-58. Many point to the Little Orphan Annie 1844 seated dime as a difficult acquisition. It does not, however, have the least mintage in the Stars Obverse series, for that honor belongs to this 1846 with a mere 31,300 pieces originally delivered. The 1846 is rare in all grades. Since Brian Greer (1992), a seated dime authority, states that the 1846 is particularly elusive at or above the EF level, this choice, lustrous and toned About Uncirculated 58 survivor is destined to be a magnet for bidders in the auction. Both the obverse and the reverse are naturally toned at the rims in prevailing russet and gray patina. There are also a few swirls of lighter, old-silver color blended together through the central obverse. By the time we get to the reverse, some iridescent steel blue has appeared in a few areas outside the wreath. Plenty sharp when it comes to striking definition, every device is evident despite light highpoint wear. We find there are no noticeable abrasions to detract attention. Undeniably this is one of the most significant offerings of seated Liberty coinage in this sale, and a coin that would grace any collection with its presence. Pop 1; 1 finer in 61.
Estimated Value $15,000 - 17,500.
Ex: Heritage 6/29/08 Auction (Realized $23,000).
