1909-S Lincoln Cent. VDB. PCGS graded MS-65 Red & Brown. Well struck with lots of mint red. Only 484,000 minted. The first Lincoln Cents delivered by the San Francisco Mint in 1909 were of the now-popular V.D.B. variety. The Mint's decision to remove these initials from the lower reverse border resulted in a premature halt in production. The entire mintage of 309,000 Indian Cents dated 1909-S, was executed in January. Why no additional ones were coined is unknown, because the Lincoln dies were not ready until June. Like its Philadelphia Mint counterpart, 1909-S V.D.B. is usually well struck. The Holy Grail for Lincoln Cent collectors, the acquisition of a 1909-S V.D.B. cent like the present offering usually marks the completion of this series.
It has been said that a number of other issues may be rarer in Mint State. Yet this cherished coin remains the most legendary regular-issue entry in terms of the number available in all grades. For years it has also been the most widely spoken about outside of the numismatic area. Fiery-gold to copper-red color covers much of the fields of this handsome coin. After the luster's work is performed in awing us with its beauty, we next see that the devices were struck with exactitude rarely found on other early S-mint Lincolns. Fortunately for collectors, once the public realized that coins with the V.D.B. would be replaced due to the outcry of the bold initials on the lower reverse, many were put aside. Hence, these have always been popular with collectors, and they have always found feverish demand (PCGS # 2427) .
