Lot 1771

2¢ Encased Postage. Gault, J. . Fr-EP-31. . KL-EPS100. HB-128. Sc-EP94. This J. Gault 2¢ "Black Jack" is a legendary rarity in the encased postage series. One of only three known to exist! This is the famous Arnold Pearle specimen as shown in the Hewitt Numismatic Information Booklette, by Arlie R. Slabaugh. The case is fully Very Fine or better and is exceptionally original and a lovely chestnut brown in color. A tiny nick is located on the right obverse tab and is mentioned for identification. The mica has a natural flaw line and a few minor crazed areas. The stamp is a rich black color clearly exhibiting all details. One of the most fantastic rarities offered in this area of numismatics and is destined for the ultimate collection.

As stated in the provenance noted below: It is widely believed that the J. Gault denomination series were made to be used as his first trade samples to be shown to merchants and prospective buyers of his coinage. The 2¢ Black Jack is not part of his original samples set and for some unknown reason was never sold to any final user. Other experimental stamps, includidng some from the 1851 series were made as trial pieces. All are virtually unique unto themselves and excessively rare

Also accompanied by a letter from Dana A. Linett, president of Early American Numismatics, ascertaining its authenticity and orginallity.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 12,500.
Ex Early American Numismatics, Jan. 22, 1988, lot 286 ($10,250.). Prior, Arnold Pearle collection, Stack's Dec. 6, 1969, lot 980.
