Unlisted Trial Specimen. 1851 Two-Cent Internal Revenue Stamp, in a TAKE AYER's PILLS case. Gem About New with nearly full original silvering! Apparently, unknown to exist but for this specimen. The 2¢ stamp is a vivid orange with lovely, incredibly clear mica except for some insignificent natural light crazing above Washington's head. Both the obverse and reverse of the case exhibits considerable original silvering that is slightly worn off at the edges and highpoints of the lettering. The rims are sound and clear of marks.
As stated in the provenance noted below: A magnificent Rarity that is extensively discussed by Slabaugh in the Hewitt catalog. He addresses knowing of another 1851 2¢ Internal Revenue Stamp used with a Drank's Plantation Bitters reverse. he explains that there are several other experimental pieces known using other denominations of stamps and other reverses. Mosts of these pieces were in a collection purchased in 1884 by the Scovill manufacturing Company and it was later given to the Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury, Ct…Slabaugh continues, that since the records of the company were destroyed by a fire in 1881, it has not been possible to ascertain just what all denominations and quantities Gault had for for different issues.
Also accompanied by a letter from Dana A. Linett, president of Early American Numismatics, ascertaining its authenticity and orginallity.
