Darwin, Charles (1809-1882) Evolutionary biologist; he published On the Origin of Species in 1859. Autograph Letter Signed "Ch. Darwin," 1 page, 8 x 5 in., Beckenham, Nov. 1 (1879). To an unnamed recipient: "I shd. be particularly obliged if you would get sent by Post from Germany the following book, as I want it immediately. 'Dr. Frank - Die Natur: Wagerechte Richtung von Pflanzentheilen &c. ' Leipzig 1870…." The translation of the German title is The Natural Horizontal Direction of Plant Components and their Dependence on Light and Gravitation Fine; folds and a diagonal crease in lower left corner. The contemporary vertical line down the center and the note at lower left were likely accomplished by the recipient to indicate that he had replied to Darwin. It is interesting that Darwin was reading a work of biologist Albert Bernhard Frank, whose theories on symbiosis (a term he is credited as originating) conflicted in part with Darwin's theory of natural selection.
