Byzantine Empire. Constantine XI, 1449-1453. Silver half Stavraton (3.15g), Constantinople. Bust of Christ facing, wearing nimbus cr. and holding book of Gospels, pellets within double border around. Rev. Nimbate bust of Constantine facing, crowned and wearing maniakon, one-line inscription ("KwNCTA. ") around. DOC 1788; cf. Bendall, "The Coinage of Constantine XI", in RN 6, 33 (1991), pp. 134-42, 101-14; PCPC 354; LPC p. 176, 1; Sear-Bendall 2569. Good Very Fine, extremely rare and important, usual careless engraving and striking.
