Byzantine Empire. John V and Anna of Savoy, 1341-1347. Silver Basilikon (1.21g), Constantinople. Coronation issue, 1341. Facing bust of Christ, wearing nimbus cr., his arms outstretched, above small half-figure of John V, crowned and wearing loros and holding labarum and gl. cr. Rev. St. Demetrius, nimbate, on l., and the deceased Andronicus III, crowned and wearing loros, on r., both stg. facing, the saint holding cross on breast. DOC 944; PCPC 199; LPC p. 120, 7; Sear-Bendall 2474. Very Fine and extremely rare, possibly only the fifth known specimen.

This type is often attributed to the reign of Andronicus III (see following lot).
