Byzantine Empire. Andronicus II and Michael IX, 1295-1320. Gold Hyperpyron Nomisma (4.12g), Thessalonica (?), 1303-20. Half-length figure of the Virgin facing, nimbate and with her hands uplifted (orans), all within circuit of the city walls of Constantinople showing four groups of triple towers, sigla K - L / K - F in field. Rev. Christ, wearing nimbus cr., stg. facing between kneeling facing figures of Andronicus, bearded, on l. and Michael, beardless, on r., Christ crowns the two emperors who each wear loros and rest one hand on chest. DOC 480-87 var.; PCPC 208 (sigla 204); Sear-Bendall 2396. Very Fine with deep striking split.
