Byzantine Empire. The Empire of Thessalonica, Theodore, Comnenus-Ducas, 1224-1230. Bronze Tetarteron Noummion (3.96g). Thessalonica 1227. Cross crosslet on globus resting on three steps, pellet within crescent on shaft, facing half-length figure of Theodore on l., wearing crown, divitision, and jeweled loros and holding akakia, facing half-length figure of St. Demetrius on r., wearing nimbus and military attire and holding sword and shield. Rev. Inscription of Theodore and his titles in seven lines across field. DOC 11 and pl. XL (this coin); Hendy -; Sear-Bendall 2169. Very Fine with dark patina and extremely rare, possibly unique.
