Byzantine Empire. Anonymous Issues of the Empire of Nicaea, 1227-1261. Electrum or Silver Aspron Trachy Nomisma (2.97g). The Virgin, nimbate, stg. facing on footstool, her hands uplifted to r. (orans), star in lower field to l. Rev. Christ Chalkites, nimbate, stg. facing on footstool, holding book of Gospels. DOC 4.2, p. 537, 1; Hendy -; Sear-Bendall 2148. Good extremely fine and very rare.

An alternative attribution of this type has been proposed by Simon Bendall who would prefer to regard it as an early issue of the mint of Trebizond, on the southern coast of the Black Sea, struck under Andronicus I Gidon, emperor of Trebizond 1222-1235.
