c. 1850 Face Design Original Artwork for Playing Cards. Thirteen original pen and ink drawings for face designs of playing cards and one drawing of what may have been intended for the back of these cards, to be printed by Jose Bau, Valencia, Spain. Includes the 2, 3 and 10 of Coins, and the 1, 3, 10, 11 and 12 of Cups, all about 4 x 2¾ in. With five smaller drawings, some with penciled notations, of Coin and Cup designs. Most have pinholes in the corners, perhaps to hold the paper in place while the artist worked. The designs in these drawings are similar to a set printed by Jose Bau about 1850 and illustrated in the Fournier Museum catalog, Volume 1, Spain #250. Age toned, sometimes heavily, around the edges, otherwise near fine.
Estimated Value $750 - 1,000.
