Byrd, Richard E (1888-1957) U.S. admiral; Arctic explorer. Typed letter signed ("R.E. Byrd") 1p, 11 x 8½ in., Boston, MA, 4 October 1933. As one ship of his 1933-34 Antarctic expedition has just left and another is leaving, Byrd writes to a wealthy supporter apprising her of the expedition's mission and asking her assistance. In part: "My personnel, as well as myself, has been hard at work for months in preparation, and you will have my enduring appreciation if you will give me financial assistance, thereby enabling me to purchase Eskimo dogs for this expedition. It will cost $1500 for me to purchase thirty dogs…" Very good; some separation at lower horizontal fold, tape remnants on verso, and slight fading to signature.
Estimated Value $250 - 350.
